In answer to your question: I think it is done because in the Jewish religion you are not allowed to pronounce the name of God. They spell it JHWH (and we say Jahweh). Maybe because the writer wants to be as authentic as possible.
But it's a guess.

Actaully there is no "J" in Hebrew some use the YHWH and some YHVH most Jews just say HaShem meaning "The Name." As to why they write G-d is just tradition for His name is not "God" it is Yahweh. The same with the name "Jesus" which if transliteralited back into Hebrew comes out as "Hey horse" his name is "Yahoshua," some write Yeshua or Y'shua. The word "Jesus" has no meaning in any langague whereas the word Yahoshua means "God Salvation" or literally Yah's salvation check this in Strongs Concordance:
NAS Genesis 49:18 "For Thy salvation, (Yahoshua), I wait, O LORD. Strongs # 03444 (yeshuah) (447b)
Meaning: salvation.
