Please pray for the countries that were affected by the earthquake yesterday: Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Somalia, and others. Over 12,000 people are reported dead and over a million are displaced from their homes. Some of these areas are homes of unreached people groups who do not have access to the gospel. Pray that God would raise up laborers for his harvest...to go and serve and to share the gospel.

The Aceh people of north Sumatra, Indonesia were hit particularly hard. They are one of the more resistent unreached people groups in Indonesia. Sumatra is the largest unreached island in the world. Pray that people's hearts would be receptive and that more workers would be sent into this area.

Thanks for praying!

Here is part of an update I received from one of my friends who works in Indonesia...

"...It is such a horrific event. Massive devastation!! Hard to imagine it. They fear there may be up to 25,000 dead in the northern area of Sumatra. The death toll could climb even higher, maybe even up to 50,000. The area of Sumatra where the epicenter of the earthquake occurred, is called Aceh.

The provincial capitol city is in shambles. Aceh has been closed to foreigners and even aid organizations because of the decades long battle between the Indonesian military and the Acehnese rebels who long for independence. Aceh always claimed independence, even when the Dutch ruled over Indonesia for centuries. Aceh is a very staunchly, fundamental Muslim area. Even in the last few years, the provincial government had instituted Islamic law. Well, since the government had closed off the area to all foreigners (and even Indonesian citizens who were not residents of Aceh had to obtain special permission to go there), there is little information coming out about Aceh. It’s beginning to be revealed, but it is slow. And the government reported very little about it and they have been very slow to respond with aid.
With this horror and catastrophe, it seems that now the “doors” are opening to Aceh. This is a heart-wrenching episode but with the opportunity for foreigners to go in, and cross-cultural workers like us, who live here and are prepared to go, we pray for openness to God’s grace and love through Jesus Christ, which the Acehnese, people and even peoples in other countries
affected by the Tsunamis, so desperately need. Amidst this grief and sadness, pray God’s glory will be revealed and the Gospel of Christ be made known."

Here is part of another update I received from someone else in the region, for those interested and wanting to pray more specifically.

"...The quake struck 145 miles away from the Provincial capital of Banda, Aceh.  This is the northern and western most province of Indonesia.  Aceh is also the most fanatic Muslim region of the country.  It has been closed to aid workers, missionaries and other Christian ministries due to ongoing warfare between the government and local insurgents demanding a more Islamic government.

One of the positive effects of this quake will be to open up this war torn region to outside observers, aid organizations and people wanting to bring the love of Christ to the people of Aceh.  There are tens of thousands of Christians in the region around the city of Medan, North Sumatra, just an hours drive south of Aceh.  They are mostly from the huge Batak tribe, and many of them will be trying to bring aid to the Muslims of Aceh and Padang West Sumatra.  The low lying city of Padang, not yet appearing in any news or websites, will have been heavily hit.  I have driven along the beaches and the river passing through this town, and it must have been devastated by the waves coming ashore.  Several Christian workers have tried for years to reach out to this region, pray for fruit as they share the kindness of Christ to the traumatized people in West Sumatra.

Another hard hit area will be the island of Nias, almost on top of the epicenter.  Intial reports say only 48 were killed, but there has been little communication from the region.  Pray for nominal believers to repent and return to the Lord.  Pray for serious believers to reach out to hurting families.  Pray for testimonies of love to be broadcast by world media which will ultimately bless the Muslims of Indonesia, Buddhists of Thailand, and Hindus of India experiencing this disaster.

Christmas is over here in the West, but Christmas celebrations, Christmas parties, and Christmas services will continue for at least 4 more weeks across Indonesia in offices, schools, homes and public buildings.  Pray for these to be used as powerful opportunities for evangelism and love in action all across the nation.

Pray in particular for the Batak and Nias believers to be effective servants of their neighbors. Pray for Christian relief organizations, especially World Vision and Samaritans Purse.  Pray for the US Navy personnel from Singapore, including many Christian sailors and pilots to be a witness for Christ and not offensive to Muslims. There is enough mistrust of America in the region; a serious and heart felt relief effort will mend some of those bad feelings.   Pray for short termers traveling during January to India, Thailand and Sri Langka… they will have more receptive audiences than otherwise.  Pray for God’s spirit to bring eternal life to a temporal world."
